A Visit to the Malaysian Association for the Blind

On the 23rd of November 2016, the Librarians of SMK Bandar Utama Damansara (3) visited the Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) in Kuala Lumpur. We went there by bus. As soon as we arrived, we were given a short briefing about the activities that was to be held during our visit.

There were 3 stations. The first station consisted of looking at and using the typewriter used by the blind or the people with poor vision. The second station is for us to get blindfolded and tested to build things correctly out of blocks. The third was also a blindfolded challenge, but we got to use the canes that the blind use to walk with.

We took turns in each station and experienced how it feels to do daily activities without sight. After that, Chen Wei and Celine Wong sang a lovely song for everyone. For the last stop, we visited the Library and Resource Centre of MAB. We left the place for school around 1.00 p.m.

Appointment Ceremony for Prefects and Librarians 2016

Bad libraries build collections,
good libraries build services,
great libraries build communities.
R. David Lankes

The 18th of July 2016 marked another milestone in my life. Finally, that much-awaited day arrived, after enduring 6 months under probation. Today, I would be appointed as Librarian in the Appointment Ceremony for Prefects and Librarians.

As a probationary Librarian, I was scared stiff. I couldn’t believe it was really happening. Excitement filled my heart as I walked to the basketball court. At around 7.15 a.m., all the students and teachers gathered at our basketball court. All the Librarians and Prefects sat in an orderly manner, as instructed during their rehearsal.

The ceremony began with our school principal, Puan Zuraidah giving a wonderful speech. Then, everyone eagerly waited their turn as the probationary Prefects were called to the stage first, followed by senior Prefects appointed to specific portfolios.

Finally, there was a loud roar when the probationary Librarians were called upon, followed by those appointed to Sub-units and heads of duty days. I quivered with excitement as I was offered the post of Assistant Head of the Bulletin Sub-unit.

Then, the newly appointed High Committee members received their name tags. I could see the joy and excitement on the faces of the students as the appointments were announced.

Next, the outgoing Librarians symbolically handed over their duties and responsibilities to their juniors with lighted candles.

After that, all the Prefects and Librarians pledged to undertake their assignments and duties diligently - to serve the school faithfully and the best of their abilities.

Our Head Librarian, Quek Zhy Hgu then took the stand to take her pledge. This was followed by a bow by Librarians and Prefects to the teachers and students of the school.

After that, the retiring Prefects and Librarians bowed before the teachers and the students as a sign of appreciation and gratitude of being given a chance to serve the school. Eventually, the official assembly ended and all the students went to their respective classes.

Later on, the Prefects and the Librarians took some photographs to capture and remember this happy occasion. Some junior Librarians were happy that they got exciting appointments. Meanwhile, the retired Librarians hugged each other, as tears streamed down their cheeks uncontrollably.

This was an experience that I will never forget as gave me self-confidence and a new-found thirst for knowledge. I am very grateful to Puan Sabrina and all Librarians for the excellent planning, organisation and execution of the Appointment Ceremony - thus making it a very special occasion for the new junior Librarians.

Librarians are tour guides for all of knowledge.

Poem - The Importance of Education

Education
the light of our life
A gift of academic rife

Education
A path to divine success
A smooth drive to our greatness

Education
gives our thinking a different appearance
And helps drive away all our ignorance

Education
the process of teaching and learning
Which will help us in our future earning

Education
The progressive discovery of our true self
And exploitation of the potentials of oneself

Education
A torch of academic brilliance
And backbone of inner resilience

Education
the key to unlock the golden door of freedom
And stage our rise to stardom

Education
not all about bookish knowledge
But it is also about practical knowledge

Education
makes a person stand up on his toes
And helps a person to fight with all his foes

Education
A fundamental foundation
For any country, state or nation

Education
A think line between right or wrong
A ladder that takes us to a height where we belong

Education
Mother of all profession
That helps aquires all our possession

Education
It is our right
For in it our future is bright

Sports Day - An Ice Cream Seller's Perspective!

Sports, it keeps us healthy and fit, strengthens us and brings countless of other benefits.

31st July 2016 was when our school had the annual Sports Day. The event started around 8.00 a.m., with all the uniform bodies and all four houses – Red, Yellow, Blue and Green - marching in.  Our Sports Day then proceeded with performances from all four houses. The performances were beyond expectations, as they were well-prepared and special.

Besides that, there was also performances by our school cheerleading team, Stompers, and our school marching band. They practiced very hard for Sports Day and their hard work definitely did not go to waste! This made sports day even more eventful.

After a speech given by our Principal and a representative from the Education Ministry, the crowd almost cheered: let the sports begin! The athletes got in position on the running track and with the sound of the horn, they sprinted off for the win.

Whilst the athletes in different categories of running went on and competed, we Librarians were selling drinks and ice cream. We sold Milo, and ais krim potong. We had a stall set up in the stadium. My friend and I were the ones in-charge of walking around the audience to sell the ice cream.

We walked all the way from one end of the stadium to the other end, carrying a big ice box chock-full with ice cream to be sold. This happened when the running was going on as well. There were many categories for running. Hours passed, but the houses did not settle down - instead they continued to cheer for their champions.

Even though I wanted to sit down and watch the race, I felt happy to help sell and earn money for the Library. Our hands were tired from holding the ice box and our legs were giving out, but we definitely did not regret helping out. We sold out our ice cream and Milo, which was great.

Around 1.00 p.m., the medal-giving ceremony commenced. Those who won in the race and also other sport categories before sports day received their well-deserved medals.

Prizes for the houses - for categories such as best performance and best teamwork - were given out. Finally, the long anticipated result for the best house was announced, and the winner was Yellow House! Yellow House were elated and proud that they were the champions of 2016.

That was the end of sports day. The atmosphere was great and overall, it was very memorable. Sports Day was a huge success - an amazing day for SMK Bandar Utama Damansara (3), I eagerly await next year’s sports day - for who knows what it has in store for us?

SMKBU(3)'s Mega Raya 2016

On the 20th July 2016, my school SKK SMK BU(3) had organised an event called Mega Raya. It was an exiting event and everyone including the teachers were looking forward to it. According to my seniors, this event is launched annually.

A day before this I saw many students exchanging traditional clothing such baju raya, sari, cheongsam and many more. On the day itself, almost all the students brought huge bags just like me. Even the teachers were wearing their traditional clothing.

An hour before the event started, the prefects and some students helped to prepare the event while being supervised by the teacher. It was all coming together and the stage started to look more traditional.

After the bell rang, we were given an hour to change our clothes to our traditional clothing. As for me I was wearing a traditional indian clothing even though I am not indian. Everyone was so exited and we spent most of our time taking photos. Then the second bell rang, we gathered at the dewan berbumbung for the event.

Soon the principal gave a speech and the traditional games begin. The first game that we played was congkak. There were also some other intense games going on as everyone watched. Congkak is a traditional Malay board game. While playing, we were given traditional food. One of the traditional food was sate.

At 4p.m. sadly the event ended. I am really lucky to be in this school and also to be a Malaysian.

The Comeback - SMKBU(3)'s Wind Band Concert 2016

10 April 2016: a day I won’t forget. It was the day my school had their wind band concert! However,  it took our blood, sweat and tears to be a resounding success.

I still remember the first time our instructor Mr. Ng announced the official date for this concert. I am a band member myself; and just like my fellow band-mates, I was shocked. At first, we feared not being prepared in time, for we only had around 3 (or less) months to practice and plan everything.

We started off by getting new songs and choosing the most suitable ones to perform. Then, without further ado, we scheduled as much time as possible for our band practice. In the midst of it, we looked for suitable students to run of the event and Mr Ng brought some professionals to help us with the concert. We had the opportunity to be taught by Mr Mitsuo Nonami, a very experienced music instructor and also Mr. Ng's instructor! We had to even practice during school hours but we learnt a lot from Mr Nonami - and if it wasn’t for him, we definitely wouldn’t have learnt to play those songs so quickly.

Around that time, we started to sell our concert tickets and also promote the event. Everything went smoothly and there were no complications. The band had huge support from our schoolmates and their families. As time flew past, we were done planning and had rehearsals. Days went by, and before we knew it, it was the day of our concert.

The venue of our concert was Experimental Theatre, Dewan Tunku Canselor in University Malaya. The concert would go on from 3.00-5.00 p.m. but the whole band was there at 8.00 a m! First, we familiarised ourselves with the place and set up our instruments. We did our final check-ups and rehearsal; and got dressed in our attire an hour or so before the concert. We felt a mixture of nerves, and excitement - all at once. I remember listening to the hosts welcoming the audience, as well as the ribbon cutting ceremony by our school’s principal.

As the first segment (which is the junior band’s performance) came closer and closer, my heart was racing and my mind was a mess. When the hosts introduced the junior band, we walked out and performed two songs which are “This Old Dude” and “Shake It Off”. The juniors were only first-formers and they only started to learn how to play their instruments at the beginning of the year. Hence, they were accompanied by some of seniors, myself included. It all went extremely well, much to my relief.

After that, it was time for the second segment, which was when the rest of the seniors joined us and the juniors left. This was also the time the VIPs arrived, accompanied by the drum line. Once the VIPs were seated and we started playing, all my worries and fears disappeared. I was engrossed in playing the wonderful music and I was enjoying my time, I focused hard on the score and the conductor to avoid any mistakes. It was finally time to give the audience our all.

After each song, the audience would give us a round of applause and sometimes our conductor, which was also Mr Ng, would give short speeches of thanks.

Some of our songs consisted of more than us playing our instruments, as we also did some small actions along with it. For the last few songs, two of our school’s talented singers sang along while we played “Let It Go”, “Aku Cinta Padamu”, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” and “小幸运”. Besides that,  music videos were projected on huge screens in the venue while we were playing the songs. For the last song,  teachers and ex-band members stood on the stage, dancing and clapping. After the song ended, our concert ended as well. 2 hours went by too quickly - oh, how I felt like playing some more songs!

Everyone was soon scattered around the venue, taking pictures and talking with friends and family. We went back to our changing rooms to pack and clean up, and that wrapped up our day.

All of our time and effort was worth it. For some of us, it was our first and last concert - I definitely hope it was not, for me! I look forward for more - looking at the years to come in this amazing band with high expectations.

This was just the beginning for me, I am currently in Form Two, and I don’t feel like I was quite ready for the concert that happened this year. I want to learn more and improve myself even more, and I cannot wait for the day I can show people my full potential in music!

Music lifts me up in a way I cannot describe, and with this band filled with people who love music, this definitely isn’t going to be our last concert! The concert was a success, and there are more concerts where that came from!
