Hari Keusahawanan 2019

On the 20th of February 2019 , clubs such as the Librarian Club , LEO Club , Chinese Club , Science and Maths Club and also YE Club have participated in Hari Keusahawanan where they all sell food and also make games for the students in order to raise money for the club.

It was a typical Wednesday , hot and sunny. Usually , we would have co-curricular activities after school but on that day , students were allowed to enjoy the food made by the clubs! There was a variety of food such as quesadillas , nachos , nasi lemak and refreshing drinks to cool down ourselves on the hot day.

The day was really busy as the clubs were promoting their food to the fellow students. There were people singing and dancing as the YE Club had taken orders from students for roses and songs. As the day came to an end , the clubs packed up and cleaned the assembly point which was used for the sales , making sure there was no rubbish.

It was a fun day for all the students although most of them went home and straight away took a nap.

Program Jom Sekolah 2019

On the 18th of February 2019, marks our very first curricular assembly of SMK Bandar Utama Damansara (3) history and the launcing of Program Jom Sekolah. Since early January, our principal, Pn Zuraidah, announced during regular assembly that we would have a curricular meeting on every third Monday of the month. Not only that, students are required to wear their designated uniforms from their curricular unit.

The morning started with the students assembling wearing their uniforms at the multi-purpose hall. Soon after that, the teachers started coming in the hall along with a few police officers. By 7:30am, our very first curricular assembly commenced. The assembly started with a few words from our principal. After 10 minutes or so, she welcomed one of the police officers that attended to the pedestal on stage. He talked about cases nowadays, students getting kidnapped by strangers or being bullied in school by upperclassmen. He strongly adviced us to take care of our safety during and after school and also urged us to stay in school and not be involed with gangsterism activities as it can lead us to the wrong path. He then concluded that students safety is an upmost priority for each of us students. By 8.15am, assembly ended.

I hope that the students would take the policeman’s advice on student safety to heart.

Chinese New Year Celebration 2019

On the 1st of February 2019, SMKBUD3 held its very own Chinese New Year Celebration. It was on a Friday and started after recess which was at 11am. The celebration started off with our national anthem Negaraku followed by a speech by the principal Pn Zuraidah and by the Yang Di Pertua Ketua PIBG Mr Kalairasu. The respective speeches was about the importance of celebrating Chinese New Year and the meaning behind every Chinese Zodiac. After that was the launching of the Chinese New Year Celebration.

We began the the celebration with performances. The first performance was a tradisional tarian kipas. It was very entertaining and rather immersive. They used colourful fans to dance with and the dancers looked extremly gracefull when they were dancing. This was followed with a duet. The performance was some real ear candy. There was also a performance done by the Chinese Society Club. They danced their way to our hearts. The second last performance was a performance by a Gaohu, a Chinese instrument which is similar to the Erhu. The Gaohu Master played 3 songs. The first song was extremly graceful. The second song was a balland type of song. The song tells us a love story about a boy and a girl during Chinese New Year. The third song was a rock song. The Gaohu master was playing rifts that you would hear on a guitar.

This caught the attention of many students and teachers. A big round of applause was give to the Gaohu master. There was also a Quiz about Chinese New Year to students and teachers. Every question answered correctly, the teacher or student was rewarded with an ampao. The final performance was a staple Chinese New Year performance which was a lion dance. This wasn’t some ordinary cheap lion dance performance. Stunts were done such as jumping on high podiums, jumping with one leg and flipping from podium to podium. The celebration ended around 12:15pm. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and went home with happy faces.

Merentas Desa 2019

It was a faithful Friday morning, on the 25th  of January 2019 when SMK Bandar Utama Damansara (3) organised their annual Merentas Desa for 2019. All students throughout Form1 to Form 5, were instructed to wear their following house T-shirts such as the yellow house tshirt and so on. Though it would be a tradition for the upper forms to involve themselves for this event, they felt a burning passion to do their very best as it would be one of their last years doing so.

The route for this years merentas desa has not changed since the last few years. Students would be running around the Bandar Utama area, passing by Centrepoint, SJK(C) Puay Chai and Effingham. Teachers as well as a few policemen were stationed along the route to ensure the students safety during the run. All together, the total distance of this route would be around 3km.

The morning started at 8 am with a few words from our principal, Pn Zuraidah, and soon passed on the event to Cikgu Syukri to explain the rules of the run. He explained that both the boys and girls would be separated into 3 categories according to forms. The girls would be released first, by the lowest form to the hjghest, then followed by the boys. Other than that, Cikgu Syukri advised the students to stay clear off the roads and to be careful when running on slippery surfaces to avoid any injury.

By 8.20am, the presidents of each house were requested to lead the warm up before the run. After a few stretches, P3 was called out to get ready by the school entrance to begin the race. They were then followed by P2 after a 2 minute interval and the other categories so on. After 10 minutes since P3 was released, the L1 category finally was able to begin after waiting for the L3 and L2 categories to leave the school compound.

After 50 minutes or so, the students came back to school sweaty and exhausted from running but once they reached school, they had to run to the school's basketball court to get a placing in their category. Once people started to return to school, they found that there were people selling cool drinks near the canteen . Once the teachers concluded that all the students arrived back to school, they let everyone off for recess. In the meantime, the teachers counted the points collected by the students during the run according the sports houses.

After an hour long recess that began at 10am, everyone had to assemble at the shaded basketball court . Pn Zuraidah thanked the students for being enthusiastic in completing the run. Soon after that, the results of the race were announced which brought everyones' adrenaline rising. All the houses did their own signiture cheer to spark enthusiasm into every member. With adrenaline running high, the teachers announced the total marks collected and each houses placing. Blue house nabbed first place, following by green house in second which differed by one point with yellow house which placed in third and finally with red house in fourth. Though some were not satisfied with their house pacing, they vowed to work much harder in the upcoming sports day to take their rightful place in first.

Speaking as a true fan of our schools’ sports day, i cant wait for what might happen on sports day on 4 April. I hope it would be as exciting as last year. Who would know if the tables would turn again?

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is a special day for not just lovers but love in general. Whether it be philia love or pragma love. Not many people know this but there are many types of love.
     Examples:
• Eros: Love of the body.
• Philia: Love of the mind. Also know as brotherly love.
• Ludus: Playful love.
• Pragma: Longstanding love.
• Agape: Love of the soul.
• Philautia: Love of the self.
• Storge: Love of the child.

If you don’t have anyone to celebrate valentines with you are not alone. Many people believe just because they don’t have a date or a significant other they will be lonely or unloved for Valentine’s Day. We have to understand that there is always someone who is constantly giving love to us whether it be our wives, ancestors, parents , siblings or friends. We cannot deny the fact that we are being constantly loved by others no matter how unloved or lonely we feel.

With that I would like to wish everyone a Happy Valentines Day.

Orientation Day

On the 28th of December 2018, SMKBU3 had their orientation day where all the new students of SMKBU3, accompanied by their parents, came to register themselves. The event started at 8am but the school compound was already packed half an hour before. After the students were done registering at the front counters ,they were ushered to the main hall at Block A for a speech by Miss Woo and were seated according to their classes. After the speeches and a performance from the pancaragam club, the students were brought on a tour around the school by the prefects while the parents stayed in the hall to listen to a brief talk from the principal.

The tour included the school office, canteen, the library and other places. A few of our senior librarians even came to school to give a short briefing to the new students when they stopped by at the library. The tour ended with the students settling into their respective classes where the class teacher distributed textbooks to each student. Parents were allowed to go up to the classes after the briefing and settle any fees that had to be paid. The event ended around 11:30pm.

Book Fair Shah Alam

Every library has a source of getting its books. The best way to obtain books is from a book fair as it is cheaper than normal bookstores. Last week, a group containing a few librarians and probates (including me) went to the Shah Alam Book Fair to get some new books for the library. It stated early in the morning when students went to their classes as usual for the first one hour. After that, all the volunteers gathered at the canteen to get ready. We were separated into different groups. My friends and I were with two librarians who were Lim Wye Yee and Loh Sim Yi. After we were sorted, we went to the bus. After the headcount, we waited a short amount of time only to reach our destination. We filled a form and then waited to be allowed in. we were instructed to look for reference books to help students that were weak in certain subjects. We also got some more interesting storybooksfor the library. A few times I got lost but I found my group again. I found a few books and also found robots. No, not the ones you might see in Terminator. They were really small robots. We were allowed to try them out. Even though we were supposed to play mini soccer with them, my friends and I ended up making them fight each other. Then, we got back to work. After a few hours of this, we were finally done. We went to a McDonaldsoutlet and ate. After that we had another bus trip back and everyone went library. Pn Azuratold us about the importance of Nilamespecially for exams. Then at 3 o ‘clock, we all went back home.

Minggu PSS

On the 26th till 30th of April , the librarians had the librarian week sales and many type of delicious food were sold. For example , crepe , pocket pizza , meringue , corn and many more. The librarians and probates had worked together to make it successful.

The sales were located at the canteen and many students of SMK BU3 had bought the food sold by the librarians. Many people bought the cookies and corn as it was said they were very delicious and the price was reasonable. The lemonades were also a successful hit because most of the days in Malaysia are really hot and so the lemonades had cooled our throats.

The most coolest thing about the sale was that all the food that was sold are made by the librarians themselves. This proves that our librarians have many other talents too! By the end of the week , we gained a lot of profit. All the profit we had collected from the sales will be used for Librarian Annual Dinner which will be held in August .

It was a wonderful experience for taking part in this activity as it has brought me closer to the fellow senior librarians. As a probate , I had learn a few things during this librarian week sales. I hope we will have more sales like this in the future as we can grow closer and learn more things.

The Poison Tree

I was angry with my friend;

I told my wrath, my wrath did end.

I was angry with my foe;

I told it not, my wrath did grow.

And I watered it in fears,

Night & morning with my tears:

And I sunned it with smiles,

And with soft deceitful wiles.

And it grew both day and night.

Till it bore an apple bright.

And my foe beheld it shine,

And he knew that it was mine.

And into my garden stole,

When the night had veild the pole;

In the morning glad I see;

My foe outstretched beneath the tree.

Facts About Lunar New Year

1. The date varies!

The date for Chinese New Year changes each year. It always falls between January 21 and February 20, determined by the Chinese lunar calendar. Chinese New Year 2018 is on Friday February 16.

2. The holiday is oddly called "Spring Festival".

Though in winter, Chinese call their New Year holidays 'Spring Festival' (春节 chÅ«njié /chwnn-jyeah/), because 'Start of Spring' (4–18 February) is the first of the terms in the traditional solar calendar. While wintry weather prevails, 'Start of Spring' marks the end of the coldest part of winter, when the Chinese traditionally could look forward to the beginning of spring.

3. Every Chinese New Year starts a new animal's zodiac year.

Chinese zodiac years : A very old custom is to name the years by one of 12 animals in their zodiac cycle. For example, 2018 is a year of the dog. Many Chinese still believe in astrology and other New Year superstitions.

People focus on priorities: making amends, reconciling with people, avoiding offence, and re-establishing old ties. They buy and wear new clothes, give gifts, and clean house.

4. It is a festival for 1/4 of the world's population.

It's China's winter vacation week, like between Christmas and New Year's Day other countries. Schools in China get about a month off, and universities even more. China, Hong Kong and Macau, and nine other Asian countries have public holidays.

Artificial Intelligence

What if the next time you were hungry, you could tell your kitchen to cook a meal for you?
What if with a simple touch of a button, you could get your house to clean itself?
And what if I told you this could all be possible?
With the work of artificial intelligence or AI.

Dear readers, allow me to take you on a journey on the wonders of Artificial Intelligence.

AI is something that is becoming more advanced everyday and is disrupting our world.
To most people, the idea of artificial intelligence is fascinating, which it truly is
I mean, who wouldn't want a robot to do all our chores for us, who we can communicate with or maybe one which can even advice us like a little companion?
It truly seems like a dream come true
Some of us, including I myself, were surprised that intellectuals like Elon Musk, Stephen Hawkings and Bill Gates were genuinely concerned and against the idea of advanced AI.
Now, don't get me wrong, they are actually perfectly fine with AI at its current state right now, but are very against the idea of AI becoming better.

Because they fear the day artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence
They fear what might happen when our creations become more advanced than we are
That fear has actually been around for ages
But what made that fear a near reality was in 1997
When a robot named Deep Blue, beat the World's Best Chess Player at his own game
That moment went down in history as the first time robots defeated us
That was the first and certainly wasn't the last
In the mid 2000's a robot named Watson beat the two best players at Jeopardy, a game which requires tons of memory, analytical thinking and speed
In 2016, just last year, Google's AI beat the world's best player at a game called go, a game which requires strategy, and is generally much harder than chess is
People were impressed, but they were fearful
Machines had defeated world champions
Machines had defeated some of the best of the human species
Naturally, people had been hoping humans would win in the fight against robots and were devastated to find the outcome
And they shouldn't have been
The machines were victorious, yes
But, was it superior?
No, no it wasn't
The machine wasn't victorious because it was just intelligent, the machine was victorious because of its human creators!
Always, a machine's triumph is a human's triumph
That's something we tend to forget when humans are surpassed by our own creations
People need to realise that it isn't all about
Human Vs. Machine
and instead,
Human Plus Machine
What if we combined our strengths and worked side by side?
Machines have tactics, we have strategies
Machines have memory, we have experience
Machines have objectivity,
We have passion
Human plus machine isn't the future, it's the present
And we don't get to choose when and where technological progress stops
We can't slow down, in fact we have to speed up
Our technology excels at removing difficulties and uncertainties from our lives
And so we must seek out for ever more difficult and ever more uncertain challenges
We should not worry about what machines can do today
Instead, we should worry about what they still cannot do
Because we will need the help of these new intelligent machines to turn our grandest dreams into reality
And if we fail, if we fail
It's not because our machines have become too intelligent or not intelligent enough
It's because we have grown too proud of ourselves and limited our ambitions
Us humans are not defined by our skills
There is one thing only humans can do
And That's dreaming!
So let us dream big!
