What are the rules in the library?

Finally, after so long, the video is finally uploaded.I'm pretty sure most of you are as excited about it as I am. What! You're not? Did you just say what in the world is the video for?

Well, if you must know, this video is the video shown during the annual high tea (clue much?), and it was produced by no other than the KHS Productions! It's basically about the rules of the library, but I'll let the video do the talking.

PMR trials are here!

Guess what day it was yesterday besides it being Harry Potter's birthday and also Warrior's Day? Yes, today is this blog's first anniversary! Happy belated first birthday, little old blog. One year on, and a whole lot more to go! There have been many things it has showcased for a year, and a great deal in the future too. With almost 2,000 views, I say it is a commendable achievement for it and this blog is in no danger of being dead (so yay :).

Also, today marked the beginning of the PMR examination trials. With that, it marks an expected increase of the usage of the Library ( so to all Librarians, perform your duties and step it up!). I'm pretty confident that the third formers, especially the members of our organisation (including the other administrator) would do well. I just want to say good luck and follow my advice from May written below because I know it all and you must listen to what I say as your senior (just kidding :p)

Performances!

Now, after much waiting, our maiden trials with recording our events in video have finally borne fruit. Though this blogger was unable to attend it (due to unforeseen circumstances) these three videos have successfully shown how the entire event was a blast! It was so successful that even our principal, Pn. Azizah Yusoff have lauded us Librarians as being the best party planners in the school! Such a shame I was not there to attend it all!

Now, onto the videos. As a whole, it is a commendable effort for a first, but of course, with time comes improvements. The performances themselves were a hit with everyone, and I would like to congratulate all the performers for their spectacular display of showmanship.

The first is entitled Fireflies, Korean-style!

 

The second, I Question Mark, displays how a few Librarians have experimented with popping and have patched up quite a performance.

 

The third is a subtle fusion of ballet with improvised contemporary and break dancing; a display of an interesting contrast of dance styles, all to Beirut's 'Scenic World'

Jamuan Tahunan Pusat Sumber Sekolah

Hello there my fellow blog-reading people. Recently, okay not really, TODAY, we, the Librarians of SMK Bandar Utama Damansara (3) had our annual Farewell for the retiring senior Librarians. So, this was how the day started. I'm just describing the event from a photographer's point of view, aite?

The committee members of the event already arrived the hotel as early as seven o' clock to ensure that the event will run smoothly. The committee members were running everywhere, literally, to get things organised and ready for the party.  I also took opportunity to style the emcee, and also my closest friends' hair. How the two emcees look fetching together! Even so, not only the emcees look good, but everybody look spiffy as well. If I had the chance, I would vote everybody as being the best dressed.

At about half-past eleven, all the Librarians already arrived the venue and he committee members have to wait for the arrival of the VIPs.  Most of the teachers invited have already arrived and caught themselves up on some chit-chat. Our school's beloved headmistress, Pn. Azizah, arrived on time, at about noon. Then the senior assisstant of curriculum, Pn. Nasiroh followed by our ex-Library Coordinator. Funny thing, our Senior Assistant of Student Affairs forgot about the day. Well, it's his loss.

The event started out without a hitch, which puts the planning committee at rest as they were all over the place in the morning. The speeches started, followed by performances, lucky draws, more performances and lucky draws. The highlight of the event was the drama that has become the staple of this event. It was called, 'Love at First Fart'. It really brought laughter to the Librarians and the waiters who were standing by to clear the plates and fill up cups with juice and water. Honestly, I think the drama was doused with the humor and mannerisms of our Assistant Head, Quek Zuoo Yuon . It was so unique it should be classified as a genre all by itself. It was ridiculously hilarious and the costumes were superb. One of the actors, for the sake of the drama, wore a dress, high heels and make up with loads of lipstick.

Overall, the event was purely awesome. I bet not even the School Prefects could make match up with our event. Our Librarian family is so close, we're practically like siblings, who will always have our back. We laugh like mental patients together, we fight at the most petty of things, but when we work together, no one, not even the Kremlin, could break us apart. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Librarians for doing such an amazing job throughout the year. We wouldn't have achieved what we have now without all of you awesome people.

'Towards Success, We Work Together.'

This motto will be the motto for the rest of our lives; so, dear Librarians, please cherish these valuable moments together, because you will experience them only once in your lifetime.

Selamat Hari Gawai!

Hello there! Sorry for not keeping in  touch for almost the whole of May. The holidays have finally kicked in, and free are we from the grips of examinations!

Celebrations galore explode across the Land of the Hornbill, as the harvest festival give way to much merrymaking and jubilation. For those on the other side, it must be a pleasantly quiet occasion.

That's all I have to say for now, so good bye!

Examinations!

Yikes! Exams here already! No matter what post you hold, no matter what organisation you join, examinations still haunt you. Have you studied? Yes? No? Whatever it is, let me share a bit on taking exams:

1. Don't panic! Breathe calmly, and don't freeze up like a Popsicle on a winter's day. It's not your fault they are here, it's just sadistic teachers wanting to freak you out.
2. Don't go into denial. You CAN do it, because it should all be at your fingertips.
3. Study. This is the most essential bit. Get a timetable, make yourself calm (but not too comfortable) and just revise. Do lots of mock questions, so that you can mock the questions on the day itself (Take that, sadists!)
4. Discuss. Don't just stand there like a llama. Get your best buds and discuss. Ask what you don't know, and you will be clarified, tell them. If they ask you back, tell them, because it would help you remember better.
5. Sort out the technical stuff. Pencils, pens, correction tape, paper, compasses, the list is endless! Just make sure you don't run out of any of these during the exam itself.
6. Hope for the best. Someone once said that hope and action both would let you achieve success, and that one without another would not be as perfect as you would've thought

Dirgahayu Tuanku!

Merafak sembah dan setinggi-tinggi ucapan tahniah kepada Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di-Pertuan Agong XIV, Almu'tasimu Billahi Muhibbudin Tuanku Alhaj Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah dan Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Hajah Hamidah.

Malaysia is the one of the countries that have an elective monarchy. The Yang Di-Pertuan Agong is selected amongst the nine hereditary monarchs of the Malay states in Malaysia via the Conference of Rulers in a secret ballot every five years.

Daulat tuanku! Today is the installation of His Majesty the fourteenth Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, and what a historic day it was. Riddled with coincidences and great solemnity, it was a joyous occasion for all Malaysians.

This was the first installation done at the new Istana Negara, thus replacing the old Istana Negara as the seat of the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.

Does he look familiar? For the first time in the history of Malaysia, a Sultan has become the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong twice. Our newly-installed Yang Di-Pertuan Agong has served as the fifth Yang Di-Pertuan Agong from 21 September 1970 to 20 September 1975. His Majesty is 85 this year, so it must have been quite nostalgic for him to take the throne a second time.

And also, under His Majesty, two prime ministers have served under him. As the fifth Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, Tun Abdul Razak was his prime minister, and now, Dato' Seri Najib is the incumbent prime minister, and what a coincidence that the two are father and son! Plus, both serve under the same Yang Di-Pertuan Agong!

Joyeuses Pâques!

Night has turned to day, dawn has broken into the world! Darkness is finally dispelled, and shadows can no longer hide the vices. The promise has been fulfilled, eternal joy shall reign, joy beyond human comprehension! Restored to life are the people, their failing candlelight renewed. Awash in light are their robes, pristine and white; for a new day is here, no more shall night hold sway!

A Long, Black, Great Day...

Today, the pheonix immolates itself for the sake of the ignorant, to wash them clean of any stains. Even so, the are oblivious to this, and in fact taunt the pheonix to is impending doom. Little did they know what would happen next...

Library Week 2012: Day V

Library Week has drawn to a close for this year, and today has been a spectacular ending for such a good week. Today, two activities took place and it was a suitable ending to the all-too-short Library Week.

 

Today, the book sales drew to a close. Even to the end, students still trickle in to purchase some books, right up to the last minute! Storybooks, reference books, comics and graphic novels alike were snatched up by student like there was no tomorrow (literally)! This proves to be a good response to the reading materials on sale and perhaps augur a better sale and a wider selection next year? 

 

Also today, the triduum of film screenings ended  with 'Madagascar II: Escape to Africa' receiving an encouraging response. Who doesn't want to watch this movie, may I ask? It was great fun, and made a good end to the film screenings in the Media Room.

With that, these reports on Library Week draws to a close, and I would like to end this blog post by expressing many thanks to the Librarians, students and people who were involved or supported our Library Week for their time and efforts to make this event a great success!

Library Week 2012: Day IV

Day four of the Library Week: momentum still running, its presence school-wide still being felt as the week moves on. For the day the Library has had a handful of activities for students to participate in and have fun as it strives to get the theme for this year across to the masses, which aims to ascertain that students would 'love and appreciate the School Resource Centre as a source of knowledge' and love it with all their minds and their hearts.

First off, a book review has been read at the morning assembly, describing the new books recently acquired by the Library, which would surely become some of the most borrowed books by students, and hopefully would spur on the reading habit amongst students; and who else to do this, if not our own Head of the NILAM Unit! This is proof that the Library has always been trying to keep its reading materials as current as possible to meet the demands of the ever-demanding interests of the students at large.

Then, today was the closing day of our soft drinks and cookie stall. In short, no more sweet goodies! Perhaps the Cookie Monsters within you has devoured the entire lot at one go, and maybe you didn't realise this; so we are officially revoking our invitation to Cookie Monster for the heinous crime of walloping a gazillion innocent cookies :). Even so, don't fear! Perhaps another time, soon maybe, that the sweet goodies will come back (just make sure Cookie Monster isn't around ;)

However, the book sales still isn't over, so all the bookworms out there can still come and get a few books in the Library. A huge array of books are still for sale, and there seem to be no end of the everlasting purchasing! If you still have not visited it yet, tomorrow is the last day of sales, so better grab this golden opportunity and grab a book for a reasonably affordable price!

For today, the Library ran a donation drive for the disabled and handicapped. The support was overwhelming, with some donations managing to weigh down the entire canister and the Librarian on duty. Many thanks to those who have donated, and for that we will make sure that all proceeds would go to the betterment of the disabled. Every little helps!

Finally, to sum up the day, a film screening had taken placed in the Media Room. Today's movie is 'Real Steel' and I'm pretty sure most of you know what is it about. It received a great turnout and it was a pretty good, if not awesome, film to watch.

Library Week 2012: Day III

Mid-week already? Well, it always seems too fast during Library Week. Everything is so exciting with each day being filled with lots of activities!

First off, the usual sales of cookies and soft drinks has had a good response from the students, because who wouldn't want a packet of yummy cookies and an ice-cold cup of soda? Cookie Monster, come and get them, because they are only while stocks last!

The book sale went as usual, with students coming in and purchasing book after book after book after ... well, you get the point. Still, there are awesome books to buy, so come now whilst the sales are still on! Only two days left, you know!

Today, the second-formers took a word search and what conundrum it was! Looking for words in a maze of random letters require a sharp eye and a brain able to filter out those unnecessary words and look for a pattern. Bonne chance!

Also today, the film screenings started in the Media Room, starting with the horror flicker, 'The Victim' about a man lives alone in a remote cabin and is surprised by his visitors.Not satisfied with the synopsis? Watch it yourself! If you've missed the film screening today, don't worry, because there would be more films to be screened later this week.

Library Week 2012: Day II

Today, the showers have stopped for the morning, thus allowing for the opening ceremony for Library Week to finally take place. The Librarians dashed everywhere, getting ready to take over the reins from the usual Prefects. Nervous performers, fluttering gimmicks, microphones in testing, this is no small private event.


The theme for this year's Library Week is 'Love and Appreciate the School Resource Centre as a Source of Knowledge.' For that, we at the Bulletin Unit have designed this logo to be exclusively used in the posts about Library Week for 2012. This exemplifies the goals that are the Library has aspired in the theme for this year.

After the routine sections, the opening ceremony finally kicked off with a speech from our Coordinator, Pn. Sabrina, She started off her speech with with the introduction of the year's theme. To quote her, 'Love the School Resource Centre with all your mind and all your heart.' This is so as the students are the most loyal users of the School Resource Centre, for what is it without them?

She then tells of the activities that are to be held in conjunction with Library Week; that are Scrabble competitions on Monday in English and on Tuesday in Malay; picture quiz on Tuesday for first formers and Wednesday for second formers; film screenings in the media rooms on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; donation campaign for the disabled and handicapped on Thursday; and the book sales in the Library and the sales of cookies and drinks at the Canteen throughout the week.

With that, the speech is concluded, and our Principal, Pn. Azizah Yusoff, comes up on the stage to officiate the event. With the NILAM (Reading is the Key to Knowledge) program in mind, she stresses the importance of NILAM in the future and its correlation with being well-informed. Bearing in mind the activities of the week, she points out that the Library Board is a socially responsible organisation, and via the aforementioned donation campaign, the Library could indirectly serve as a catalyst for the birth of a loving society.

The ceremony was officiated with the pinning of hearts on a banner that reads 'Love and Appreciate the School Resource Centre'.

Then, symbolic book donations took centre stage with even Pn. Azizah giving over books to be added to the ever-increasing assortment of books in the Library.

After that, the Librarians recited the poem, 'The Book of Life', with ever emphasis on life being the ultimate book to be read.

Whilst our very own dancing duo, DeSpeakable, performed up front to the delight of the assembled students.

Finally, the ceremony was closed with the singing of the NILAM song.

Today was the first day the Library was opened for the book sales. Students came class by class, hoping to get some good reads. Some books were simply snatched up and there was none left of the same title! The response was warm from the students, and that would augur well for days to come.

Meanwhile, the sales of soft drinks were over-whelming for today, with cookies being nibbled by almost every student in school today, specially whipped up by Zi Qing, one of our Assistant Head Librarians, with a special recipe given by a close friend of hers. Such goodies are too tempting to resist, so who knows how they fare tomorrow.

Next, a word quiz for first-formers became a puzzle for some. What could the word mean? Look closely, and take a hint! Maybe the mist around you could disappear and it will seem as clear as day!

Finally, another Scrabble competition today, this time in Malay. With eyes ogling around at the exotic words available in the Malay language, it was good fun.

Words lashed out at one another to beat the clock, this game also had its share of ups and downs. This competition really brought out the awareness of the diversity of the Malay vocabulary and its similarly diverse origins.

This game managed to foster strategic preplanned tactics and a little good sportsmanship. The adjudicators too learnt a thing or two from this game, and hopefully the merits would be widespread and not in vain.

After this competition (more specifically during a leisure game of Scrabble), there have been thoughts on organising another tournament, this time, based on the knockout system. With that, stay tuned for any spanking new developments.

Back to the game, the champions were 5 Orkid, followed by 4 Orkid as runner-up and 2 Orkid in third place. Well done!
